My son is working at Highland Hospital in Oakland for the next 3 months and he couldn't seem to find anyplace nearby to live for that short of a timeframe. He eventually got a place in a small complex that's in Hoover-Foster, I believe. The apartment itself is not too bad, but the area is a bit sketchy. I was wondering if anybody might have leads/suggestions on somewhere else that would be a reasonable commute for working at that hospital. Thanks.

I spent a month between leases at "Hotel Travelers", which my brother and I always pronounced in a thick French accent, 'otel Traveleurs,  in Chinatown back in the early 90s. It was cheap. The closet reeked of urine (one shared bathroom on the floor). A previous tenant had spray-painted "FUCK YOU" on the wall, and the management hadn't bothered to repaint. An acrid, burnt, chemical smell, and a faint grey haze were always in the air - I assume either crack, meth, or some combination thereof. It being the early 90s, gunfire was popping off, not nearly far enough away, on a regular basis. I spent a lot of time sitting in Chinese restaurants, eating Chinese food, and drinking lots of tea, rather than going back "home".

I was going to unrecommend it to your son, but it has been turned into yuppie condos, so never mind. Anyway, thanks for the trip down memory lane.

I've lived in some pretty cruddy places, but nothing that can top that!
