CDFW is pleased to announce the 2021 recreational Pacific halibut fishery will open Saturday, May 1 and remain open until Nov. 15, or until the quota is reached, whichever is earlier. The 2021 Pacific halibut quota for the California sport fishery is 39,260 pounds – approximately the same as the 2020 quota.

Theoretically you can catch them further south. One was caught off the Sonoma coast in the last few years by a yakker who posted it here somewhere. Realistically the further north you go the better your odds are. Somewhat common out of shelter cove, more common out of Trinidad and other points closer to the Oregon border. Usually they are found deeper, but you never know what may be swimming down on the bottom.

It’s on the short list of fish for me  left to catch in NorCal from a kayak. I may give it a serious go this season if the stars align.

Thats a crazy fish!  I missed that report.  Never would have expected a pac hali like that to be caught down here, I guess he was fishing out deeper than all the rocks?  That fish's GPS must have been broken  :smt005

Reliable place to get pac hali...  39° 25' 25.8" N, 123° 48' 14.9" W. Not quite shelter cove area, but down on the coast a bit.
