Yamaha Golden Gate Challenge offers $45,000 boat grand prize

BERKELEY-- In many organized fishing tournaments, you have to fish all year and qualify for an annual championship to win a big dollar fishing boat as prize, but in the Yamaha Golden Gate Challenge, you don't even have to catch a fish to win the grand prize 21-foot North River boat powered by a Yamaha motor.

The grand prize is only available to anglers who sign up to fish the Aug. 11 event held out of the Berkeley Marina and hosted by Western Outdoor News and Coastside Fishing Club, but technically, you don't have to catch a single fish to win it.

"There are other cash and merchandise prizes for big fish awards," said tournament director Bud Neville, who is also WON's Northern California saltwater editor and columnist. "Plus, there a thousands of dollars in additional raffle prizes provided by a long list of supporting sponsors."

In the third year, the Yamaha Golden Gate Challenge has increased in team participation and prizes each year, and in 2007, the total prize pool is valued at over $100,000. A contest for the heaviest single gamefish from four eligible species categories, the tournament is one of several hosted by WON in California and Baja, Mexico. The Golden Gate Challenge is the only one of the events that offers its own boat and motor prize. All the other events have an end-of-year boat prize award.

Powered by a Yamaha 150 h.p. four-stroke outboard, the 21-foot North River Seahawk includes standard features like suspension seats, trim tabs, full canvas, rear fish boxes, hydraulic steering, dual wipers, dual batteries, washdown pump and EZ Loader galvanized trailer. Another sponsor, Lowrance Electonics, provided a 525C sonar/GPS unit.

Teams numbering up to four anglers register to fish the event, and are given four raffle tickets that will be entered into the drawing for the boat and motor combo. Anglers must be present at the awards after 4 p.m. on Aug. 11 at the Berkeley Marina Sport Center to win raffle prizes, including the boat.

For more information, call tournament director Bud Neville at (530) 367-4813, or email inquiries to bud@wonews.com.

El, yeah, that thing is $100 a person for groups of four.. that would be nice if some kayakers showed 'em how it should be done..  BTW-I just went by today (the 5th of Aug.) to Santa Cruz Wharf and then went over to see Mark at Kayak Connection and rap to him a taste... Ahh, the memories of my first trip on a kayak out of the harbor there on Lake... it has been awhile.. I was not yaking today however... Congrats on Diesel, as I saw Spanish Mac and he told me...
