I am going to convert my revolution to a partial AI. I am looking for where I can buy the hobie pontoon that comes with hobie AIs. I am pretty sure along the way I saw a website that sells that individual piece. Option B is to build my own pontoon. Option C is to find one on craigslist or get lucky at a yard sell. But I want to build a pontoon off one side of my revolution with the trampoline tarp in-between me and the pontoon. Can anyone point me in the right direction to get this pontoon please? If I found just the pontoon itself that would be enough. I have access to a shop at work and was planning to fabricate a custom setup. Some type of aluminum welded deal. Also can anyone give me some idea of how much having the one pontoon off the side affects speed? I can get up to 7mph on glass water fully loaded with gear. In the ocean more like 5-6mph. Thanks,

A simple build for an outrigger/pontoon is to use rigid urethane insulation foam to form the size and shape you desire then glass it.

Probably a lot cheaper too? I found the pontoon online for around $400. The trampoline is also around $400. Once I get all the right hardware I am probably looking at another $1000 into my already ridiculously expensive kayak..

Probably 20 bucks or less for the foam. Maybe use two inch foam. make sure it is urethane foam. Styrofoam is not compatible with fiberglass resin. Cut two pieces and tape join for 4 inch wide pontoon. Glass/resin cost will be more than foam but you should make the pontoon for less than a 100. You can glass whatever attachments you wish to the pontoon. Tubing/ wood/ etc. To minimize drag set the pontoon up so it barely skims the water.

Let me add to this. One inch foam is half the cost of two. Joining 4 forms together is just a bit more work than two but will work equally as well.

I bought the parts for one side of the Alma special order through a local hobie dealer.  It was around $850.  A cheaper route would be to use expandacraft parts.

I ordered my stuff last spring and did not get it until the end of last summer.  The long wait due to the pandemic took the momentum out of the project.  No idea how much it will slow you down as my intentions are to mount a 2.5hp suzuki on the side with the Alma.  One of many unfinished projects on my drawing board.  Good luck with your project, and let us know how it turns out.

I've got a 2013 Hobie Adventure that I bought new, and I have been watching for cheap amas since I got the kayak. If you find a source, let me know.

The prices look good, at least compared to Hobie. Anybody ever tried these?

I believe and seen Andy Outdoors uses these and it's not made for sitting on like the Hobie Amas.

Wow $850 seems steep. Last year I was able to walk into CCK and order a brand new tandem i14T hull for under $1100. I damaged the hull so they let me buy it really cheap if you think about it. Maybe a registered island owner can help you buy it for cheaper than the 850 price.

I would estimate speed dropping to 4-4.5 mph. I run my AI with one outrigger and the trampoline set-up almost exclusively. I'm in freshwater and my best crappie spot is about 4.5 miles away from the launch (Camanche Lake). Start your peddles easy and slow until speed builds up. The outrigger makes the rig much more seaworthy and less stressful in high-traffic/rough water boating lanes. Lots of room to spread your gear when water conditions are mellow. Only minor negative is it can be a little tricky putting on a trailer with a couple more straps needed to even the load.
