Hi guys,

I am waiting for good conditions on a weekend to head out of Doran Beach for my first time. Is there any lengths of area’s you guys are willing to go? I’m not trying to go too far especially knowing I might be going alone. Want to try for some simple perch fishing or halibut(if possible). What other species of fish do you suggest this time of year for that area?

Thanks for your time!

See you out on the water 🤙🏼🌊

I crabbed Doran a couple weekends ago and caught a bunch of rocks and 1 dungie. I didn’t try fishing because rock and ling season is closed. I went out about 1-2 miles from the jetty. Besides the fish you listed you may be able to get sand dabs. Make sure to watch the weather reports and waves the coming weeks don’t look too hot.

Good luck and stay safe, I'm not seeing any good days in the forecast.  Obviously check out these forums for some safety basics.  PFD, wetsuit or drysuit, vhf, etc. are all necessary gear.

As for Bodega, I caught a sand sole there before at this time of year, mostly by accident.  I was trying to catch sand dabs or any other flatfish I could find.  Squid tipped sibiki-type rig I tied up.

Sweet!

Thanks guys for the info. I have crabbed on the jetty's as well and did ok. The weather has been very rough lately and I'm well prepared with all the necessary safety equipment, so I'm stoked about a good day to try it out. Sounds pretty dead as far as fishing especially with rock fish season ended.

Any suggestions on good spots that I could take the kayak for the first time when the conditions are ok? I mainly want to target halibut as I've yet to catch one!

Thanks guys! Enjoy your season!

I always recommend lakes first, then the bay, and the ocean last. For a bay spot you could launch from Miller Knox Park in Richmond. Plenty of parking, and a bathroom. The halibut tend to come into the bay in the spring, but I heard the a few were caught last weekend.

Mark,

Thanks for the tip! I actually tried it for my first time out at lake Sonoma last weekend so I’ve tested the waters so far. Definitely great advice and I appreciate the feedback. Also, that spot I’ve never heard of I’m going to do my research and check it out on Google Earth! 🤙🏼

Thanks again guys! ✊🏼😎✊🏼🎣
