I was able to get on the water one more time before the season ended. Christmas Day. It wasn’t very productive but any day you come home safe with fish is a good day. Cabezon 15.5”, it would’ve been thrown back earlier in the season but I needed to bring something home. Monterey, about 35 feet of water. Wind was blowing a little bit too much but other than that conditions were great. I chased what I thought was a pod of killer whales only to discover it was a pod of Risso dolphin which was still cool. They were too far for a good photo but I saw them clearly in the binoculars. Between the Risso’s and a partially digested squid in the Cabezon’s gut I’d say there’s still squid in the bay.

First pic is a screenshot of the Cabazon, second picture is its stomach contents

Cabezon is the tastiest.

I'm hoping to go out at least one more time this year. But, I was walking on West Cliff in Santa Cruz today, and the surf was wild, like something from Hawaii Five-0, with waves breaking in places that I sometimes fish. It looked like an ideal day to surf, but not so much for fishing. I hope it settles down in the next few days...

I've been eyeing Monterey on wednesday as well. If that's where you all are thinking, would be great to hook up if you are open to it. Seeing some reports of mellow conditions in the bay.

I think that's an octopus, not squid.

Hey Bushy,
My first thought when I pulled it out of her stomach was octopus as well but I thought I counted at least 9 arms. Octopus only have eight while squid have 10 including arms and tentacles. The picture makes it look like an octopus mantle above the legs but that was just some other junk not attached. Of course I could’ve counted wrong or digestion could have mangled it a bit. I realize it is far more expected to see an octopus in a Cabazon belly than a squid. Risso dolphin follow squid so I defaulted to squid when I wasn’t sure I guess.

Either way, it would still work as bait!
