Hi,

I am new to the club, and to kayak fishing, having made just one prior post.  I am trying to get to that magic number 10 to see what the club is like on the inside!  Lots of good information, I am sure.

Anyway, I have been fishing primarily out of the Port of Sacramento.  (I capsized the one time I went to the ocean, and decided to stay away from that environment until I am more competent with the kayak.)    I have caught some shaker stripers in the Port, but have yet to hook one that got the adrenaline pumping.  I have been trolling plugs and swimbaits.

My question:  Am I doing something wrong, or are the bigger fish just not in, yet?

Thanks,
Dane

One of the best threads written here. Just search and you'll find a ton of info about launch locations

Thanks for the thread Fishcomb, so much useful info there.

Figured I would share that I finally caught some keeper stripers out of the Port on Wednesday (10/28) using a standard swimbait.  Similar to you, I've had plenty of shakers so far but just recently have hooked into some bigger fish.  Also biked along the American river trail and saw a few people on the bank with keepers... Might be worth giving it another shot now

Wow, that is an excellent thread! Wish I had found that before the 2 times I skunked there. Now I have some work to do with that as a general guide!

I went back out on Monday, optimistic after seeing flyingfisher caught some recently.  I trolled during the incoming afternoon tide.  One shaker striper and one largemouth.  I saw a couple of nice sized stripers jump, but they wouldn't bite for me.  Next time.

I know of nice stripers (22"-30") being caught in SF Bay, CM creek as recently as two days ago so its possible that they are just a but slower moving up this year. I'm sure by the time I post this there are more bigs up in the river. Good luck!

Yeah just tried again a few days ago and caught a few shakers but no decent ones.  There have been a few recent YouTube videos of people catching some decent ones though so that's promising.

In other news, I ride my bike a lot past sac state and have seen some keepers caught soaking bait way up the american... officially confused by stripers this year

Went out this evening. One guy leaving had a nice, big salmon. I fished for about 2 hours with some other guys. Salmon jumped around us every 5 minutes that entire time, I kid you not. It was like a sick game of taunting. No hookups.

Were you jigging at the end of channel?  Did you striper fish?

I was jogging in the near the lock under/near the bridge. The end of the canal had some other guys. There were 3 of us on kayaks “in the middle” jigging for salmon. I didn’t try for striper since I only had 2 hours til sunset.
