HI All

I’d like to go fishing from Fort Baker, out the Golden Gate, to Kirby Cove and perhaps a bit beyond,  this Saturday, October 31s. It's not something I do alone and I am looking for someone to join me.

I have kayaked out the gate many times, am familiar with the currents and navigational hazards, and carry an abundance of safety gear;  VHF radio, tow rope, repair kit, first aid kit, extra clothing. I dress for immersion (wet suit and dry top) and wear a helmet. I’ll be paddling my sit on top Hobie.

You don’t need all that gear, but you must dress for immersion in cold water and be comfortable in bumpy water.

I will be trying for rockfish and ling cod.

Flood begins at the Gate at 8:06 AM, so it is very important to get an early start. I’d like to meet at the boat ramp directly across from the Coast Guard building, at Fort Baker, ready to get on the water, at 8:00:AM.

We might stop for a break on the beach at Kirby Cove. The swell forecast is small and the beach is an easy landing. In any case, Ebb begins at 1:45PM, so definitely need to return before then.

Thank you,

-Jonathan

Good moves.  Hopefully GPS's and compasses are part of your kit too, and redundancy of VHF and navigation tools is a big deal for trips like that.

Best of luck~

You’re going to go out the gate on the flood tide and return on the outgoing?

Out just before flood. Back just before ebb. Flood doesn’t hit 1kt until about 9:00AM. Ebb doesn’t start until 1:45PM

Actually, there is a strong eddy right up to the North Tower, on both the East and West sides. The hard part is only about 100 yards long. I’ve  made it out against the tide ( and also  failed to make it out!)

When crab season starts next weekend I will see you out there. Did I heard you right a helmet? What for?

Thanks for the specifics, I’m just remembering that north tower eddy and I truly felt challenged there and we made it to Kirby and back, Kevin and I, and I’m glad we experienced that.  Your confirmation that it’s doable reminds me that it is doable studying those specific windows of opportunity.  Thanks and have fun.  Hope you slay... :smt006

I do go crabbing. Usually off of Baker Beach, although it can be super dumpy. Have never tried crabbing the North side of the Gate. Maybe its time to try that.
I always wear a helmet around rocks and when there is a chance of a surf landing. Kirby Cove is almost always a gentle beach and probably safe without a helmet, but all the other bail-outs along the headlands are much more challenging. I have broken paddles and had my kayak sucked out to sea at Black Sand Beach. I hav also been hit in the helmet when other paddlers lost control of their paddle or their kayak in the surf.
