So, I have spent about 6 weeks trying to figure out the Port of Sacramento.  I have been trolling but after multiple trips have only two shaker stripers to my name.  No other bites.  I have been trying to figure out why, and wonder the following:

Do they wait for the water temperature to drop?  It is 72-73 degrees in the deep water channel, and I wonder if they wait til it cools to come that far up the system?

Do they only come that far in the spring to spawn?  I read the majority stay further west in the fall and winter, hanging out in places like Montezuma slough? True?

Are they in the deep parts of the channel avoiding the heat, and thus available only to those jig or bait fishing?  I have been trolling in 8-20 feet of water, and wonder if that is a tactic best reserved for a different season?

Anyone with knowledge who is willing to chime in, is appreciated.

Thanks,
Dane

Been sort of a strange fall for me so far. I've been out numerous times in the mid/north bay (san rafael and surrounding areas) and the fishing has been slow AF compared to past years. There's bait everywhere, good tides, etc but it's been tough everywhere I've tried. Always manage to scratch out a few fish but doesn't compare to past years.

I'm assuming the big push thru the bay is still to come? Anyone else getting out these days?

Striper fishing in the deep water channel is the best Jan - March. Once everything else muddys up,the better stripers show up.
We have the government, that our forefathers warned us about.

Twopatch,

Thanks for the response.  That makes sense.  BTW-I am in Davis, and I see you are in West Sac.  Perhaps we will run into each other over the winter.  I have the same boat as you, '18 cam Outback.  I will keep an eye out for you.

New to the group...
I’ve been out to the DWC twice to jig for salmon and troll for striper. No bites on anything, I usually can scare up shaker striper using bait from shore, but new to yak fishing (so I’m learning a whole new thing). May go back out in Nov for one last try at salmon.

I’m in Stockton, so maybe I’ll see you guys around in the winter for striper action. May try the bay Alameda Rock Wall in Nov as well if anyone is game.
