My kids love to eat pan fried sand dabs.  So, this coming Sunday, I'll try to catch some.  How deep are they?  I hope I don't have to go beyond the red buoy.  I never intentionally try to catch them before, so any help is appreciated.

I had a nice sand dab show up in a crab trap in only 40 feet of water at HMB, but it seems like they are rare that shallow. Probably your best nearby bet is in the sandy area that is south and east of the PP buoy, but that is a little more than a mile offshore from the #3 green buoy. I’ve caught a few out there.

I am curious to hear what others have to say.

I think you need to find a sand flat. Not mud, not rock, but sand.
Not sure where’s the ideal place for that.
Here’s how to catch them:

Excellent table fare! I like them more than halibut. People usually get 'em in deeper water (120ft +) using a sabiki rig tipped with squid. Weights are placed above and below the rig so it lays flat on the bottom.
