Hi everyone

I'm new to the obsession. Only been out of the santa cruz harbor / capitola area. Is fishing these spots futile in November? Do I need to hike up north to HMB or beyond to have any hope?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

That's a long hike!  Welcome, fishing is never futile for the obsessed, always a lesson to be learned, a system refined, new gear to be pondered, just the first 100 yd. glide on the water is worth the whole experience sometimes.  Join us in our obsession.  I do not know SC reports or patterns but I do know my buddies on skiffs have been killin' da Lings and rockfish in certain areas of the area.  Otherwise there are no fish in Santa Cruz :smt002 :smt006

I'm going tomorrow, Mile Buoy/50-70 fow off of Steamer Lane mostly to test my shoulder, but it should be a nice day just to be out, so I'll let you know, if I catch anything.  Lings do come in shallow late in the year, and the further west you go, the better the better your chances. Ch 69

The rockfishing seems to have been pretty good recently, as long as the swell is down. And as FT says, about 50 to 70 fow just east of the mile buoy is good—but don’t get too close to the buoy as some crazy sea lions hang out there. If you are ambitious and want to go to the west side, that’s probably even better.  And now should be the time for some decent lingcod...

I posted a report in a new post in Private Fishing Reports, "SC 11/16/20, not much" because I couldn't find this thread.   Few and small fish.  Larger than average swell, otherwise great conditions, nice sun.  I only went out around and beyond the Mile Buoy.  It might have been better west toward Natural Bridges and in close for lings, but not getting into the narrow shoreline reserve there. But the swell would have been worse there, and I wouldn't drive very far to find out, if I were you.
I wasn't sure, but it seemed as though there was a vestige of red tide all around, just slightly brown water, I couldn't really decide if it was still lingering.  With this recent storm, maybe that will clear out. It seems there's been a long spell of red tide this year, and that generally means fishing suffers.
There were no other kayakers out, and very few boats for such nice weather, so I think that tells you what others thought the prospects were.

When you get 10 posts you'll be able to see the Members Only Fishing Reports page, Dirk.

But there still won't be any fish in SC.   :smt003
