For the folks who have gone through the trouble of wire the fish finder into your hobies. What do you do with the cables when you're not using the fish finder? Anyone come up with a clever way of protecting the cable ends when you're doing something like crabbing, where you don't need sonar?

I just pack the them with dielectric grease to keep the water out, rinse with freshwater when done, apply more dielectric grease. Repeat as necessary.

+1 and add a thin film of dielectric grease (it's silicone afterall) to any seals (chartcard door, usb plug door, whatever) to supplement.

You need sonar for crabbing. #1 dungies live in the sand, red rocks live in the rocks. #2 you need to know how deep it is. Don't drop in 100' if you have 50' of rope. #3 if you have GPS you can find you bouys when the fog rolls in.

+1

Also after recently noticing some corrosion in one pin socket of my sonar cable, I bought some little caulking tube condoms I'm going to try next time I'm out without my unit (which is rare).

Tuck them into the little pocket on the side.

I actually rewired my set up and have the wires under the front hatch. So when not in use they just stay inside my front hatch.

I’m not sure if I actually like it better though. I may put it back through the Hobie grommet thing on the side.

dielectric grease is a must - but they also have connector caps that go over the plug when not in use
