Hi,
I'm looking for anyone in or around San Francisco willing to give away 2-3 sturdy old/broken rods for poke poling. The rod's can have broken eyes but I'd like to have the top eye intact.
If you have any one has any that they won't use anymore, please let me know. Thanks all!

Nope. You want one of these https://www.shakespeare-fishing.com/shakespeare-rods-spinning-rods/wonderpole-spinning-rod/1365051.html

Collapsible and super durable. Single ring on tip. Attach snap there. Then use pre snelled leaders clipped onto the snap. Quick and easy.

They cost $15-$30 depending on length. I like the 12 foot model.

If you don't need collapsable, I picked up 15' bamboo for $7 from my local garden store.  a short wrap of SS wire, a crimp and a snap swivel and you're in business.

+1 for the bamboo
10' bamboo garden stake.  I make the wire tip part with 1/3 of a tomato cage wrapped around the last foot, the metal seems to avoid corrosion really well.  Snap swivel on the end.  Total cost about $5.

I've also seen dudes clean up on eels with extendable paint roller handles.

Old rods don't work well for me, I tend to break them on the first day poke poling.  Rod eyes aren't meant for poking in rocks, and the tips are too damn fragile.

Agree with the bamboo pole, they work great. I use an old metal clothes hanger piece taped on to the bamboo with an eye bent into the end for the hook to attach to.

Any old broom stick or PVC pipe will work fine.

Go as low cost and low tech as possible.  Bamboo pole, coat hanger, little bit of "leader" on the tip for some action.  You'll be fishing by braille in the rocks, keep it simple and cheap.  Also recommend using heavy gauge hooks, thinner wire will bend too easily and if a big eel wraps its tail around a rock it can be tough to get out.

Just a wire coat hanger will work fine.  Having said that, I have a few old rods that would be perfect for reincarnation as poke-poles.  Im in Santa Cruz.  Free.
