Hello Fellow Yakers!

I caught the fishing bug a few years back, spent a lot of time trout fishing in the Sierra. The moment I started saltwater fishing I was looking for a way to be on the water more immersed in the experience. I got my Kayak (older model Wilderness Tarpon 12') a few weeks ago and have been putting in experience time and started hunting for Halibut, with no luck.

I've taken her to Tomales, with a friend, and a solo out near Paradise park. Does anyone have any not obvious tips for a beginner?

Does anyone have tips to land a Halibut?

I've sailed in the bay my entire life, i know how quick the water can change. I use a PFD, of course. Does anyonehere have strong feelings about solo at Tomales?

Welcome to NCKA!
There are plenty of posts on Halibut fishing. Just search for Halibut.
If you are new to kayak saltwater fishing, then I’d recommend rockfish fishing because it’s simpler and easier. Simpler because it’s mostly vertical jigging (you don’t need to move while fishing) and easier because you don’t need to consider tides, and as long as there’s rock below, you’d be able to get a bite.
There are plenty of places to rock fish (Rockaway is where I go because it’s close to Home). I have yet to fish in Tomales, but it’s on my todo.
My top 3 tips:
- Get a VHF radio
- Get a whistle and a safety knife for your PFD
- Never launch or land like someone who is going fishing, but like someone who is going through grade 5 rapids. Strap everything down. Assume you will capsize. This is coming from someone who lost a nice rod&reel the 1st time, and a GoPro the 2nd time.
Luck favors the prepared
