Alameda Rockwall: Saved by the striper

Today was great day. Recently, I picked up a used Revo 13 and have been eager to take it out.  I am practicing for the big blue and getting used to having a rigged Hobie since I have been mostly fishing from a 7 foot sit inside kayak. 

The forecasts looked great this morning but the tide was extremely low at sunrise.  My goal was to drift with brined smelt to the end of the wall and try for halibut since I was catching the tail end of the ebb tide.  I got to the end of the wall without any apparent bites.  As I drifted around for another thirty minutes I noticed the tide began to switch.  It became now or never time because I only had a couple of hours available to be on the water.  Suddenly, my rod tip goes straight down! I assumed it was a keeper halibut but as I brought the fish to the surface it appeared shiny!  I thought maybe I was lucky as heck and hooked up on a salmon.  The fish made a few more runs before I got it into my net where I saw that it was a striped bass and not a salmon...Oh well, it was still a good fish. One thing I think I know from striper fishing is that where there is one there is more.  I only brought six brined smelt and I was down to five.  My next two drops got picked off almost immediately and on my fourth drop I landed my next fish, another striped bass.  My last brined smelt went untouched, all the way back to the launch.

The skunk was saved by the striper.
