hey everyone, i just decided to take the plunge and get a kayak. I picked up a tandem feel free lure (tandem so I can take my kid out too) so far I've had it out a few times (santa cruz, Bodega,  and the napa river. I say a post about some guys coming up to fish the napa river next Saturday and would be interested in meeting up. Other than that, im hear to make connections, and share experiences. I am interested in hearing some recommendations on walkie-talkies, as I do take saftey pretty seriously.

Welcome.

You should review the Safety Section of the Form.
One good safety summary list:  http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=27534.0
I have been using Standard Horizon HX300 VHF radio for the last four years and happy with it.  I am sure might be a newer and better model now.
Launching and landing tandem kayak takes a littler more coordination in the ocean.

I too am a newbie to the Kayak sport fishing. Just recently picked up my first Yak, it's an "Old Town 106 MK", and finally got it registered with the DMV only after the third try. Never kayak before. Should I go to a lake first to get accustom before going the river? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Yes.
Get your safety gear and practice self-rescue in a lake first.
