I plan to launch from the harbor.  It'll be my first time out there.  Anyone else going to be there?

Any tips would be appreciated!

I'm a definite maybe.

Actually, I'm planning on it, but I got an annoying headache this afternoon (probably just the heat). So, I'll be out as long as I don't feel too crappy in the early AM.

Be warned that the red tide was bad around the harbor this afternoon. I suspect it will be much better out by the mile buoy, prolly better on the west side too.

Anyways, feel free to PM me if you want info on all of my not-so-secret spots...

First time poster but long time lurker on this forum.

This will be my first time fishing SC, though I've sailed the area many times.   I'll be out there in the early morning in a skiff with the family.  We're planning to start up trying out the area near mile buoy and the starting buoy, but any advice welcomed.

Try to avoid the red tide, if it's still around. Good luck.

How'd it go? I heard a report of rockfish + lings and a fish cleaning station full of hali carcasses @ SC. Can anyone confirm?

I had some work to do, so I couldn't get there early, and ended up launching at about 11:00am. By that point, it was mostly just a mission to escape the heat. The wind picked up shortly after launch, so I sailed out past the red tide and fished a little bit, but got tired of fighting the wind and ended up spending most of my 2.5 hours on the water just sailing around. The cool breeze and infamous wet ride of the Hobie AI were much appreciated.

It's funny that you mention carcasses, because I did see one nice skeletonized halibut at the fish cleaning station...

With the red tide close in, it was difficult to find live bait, and we used some squid and frozen anchovy we brought.   I got some shakers just beyond the area between the whistle and mile buoy.  We also got a variety of rockfish in near mile buoy.

Back at the wharf, I heard of some lings being taken, but no halibut by the time we left.

It was a bit slower than I expected, but everyone had a good time.  The big win for us was the relief from the 30 degree hotter weather back home.

Glad to hear that you at least got some fish on such a slow day. Legal lingcod seem to be harder to come by than halibut in Santa Cruz this year.

Caught about a half dozen rockfish by the mile buoy last Friday.  First time there, so I was happy with what I got!

The redtide went about 1/2 a mile out.  Wind picked up by about 1230p. I didn't notice how hot it was while I was out, but man... thought I was gonna get a heart attack from the heat while trying to cartop my kayak.

Met a couple of veterans on the way in.  One of them had a gigantic Lingcod and some other fish.  No halibut from what I saw.

Was a good day by my standards!  (low bar)

On Saturday, it was scorching hot in SC too. I didn't go on Sunday, but the beach traffic that usually has us boxed in (we live near highway 17) on hot weekend days was nonexistent. You know it's bad when it's too hot to go to the beach...
