title checks out.  :smt002

My fear is that this piece would mortally wound a fish right before the fish breaks it into pieces. A fish over 4-5 pounds can be really strong with the right leverage.
I've built a lot of gaffs, and the mustad zinc coated hooks work well, or if you want DIY stainless go with a piece of stainless rod.

Totally thinking the same thing. Might be easiest to just turn a piece of SS all thread into a Hawaiian spear gaff / kill spear

.

The only thing thing that has changed since that thread is that Carrie Wilson says the wireman’s gaff connected to an A1 buoy is fine and not considered mousetrap gear.

Everything else is still the same I think.

Yep you nailed it, definitely the sketchiest most prone to heartbreak gaff i’ve ever seen.

Here is the easy $25 dual purpose bonker/gaff option I went with.

I paid $12.01 after taxes (that included my free shipping) a month ago to get this and its gotten me a few rockfish and halibut already!
18" was the perfect size I think!

Even though butthunter used the word cheap, I don't think his DYI pride is concerned with cost. Go stick a fish with it and bring back a pic, we're all waiting.
