Gaffing halibut

If you lasso and hogtie them they can’t flop around. Slip loop around the tail, rope through the gills and out the mouth, tied then to a loop in the middle of the rope. I’ve never done that to a California halibut but no reason you couldn’t.  Just be careful of the teeth when you thread the rope through the mouth.  There’s lots of them and they are sharp.

One more security step:  STriner the fish while it's on the gaff and stil in the water.  then bonk the crap out of it. Even if it slips or flips off the gaff, you got it on the divers striner.  And, bonking does NOT prevent halibut mania later on.  Make sure that fish is secured with bungies, or inside your fish bag.  they can go nuts 1/2 hour later.
