Arrived at Capitola at 05:47hrs. Met Janice (“Big J”) There getting here gear ready to go. I down loaded my gear down to the beach and had to hurry and park the vehicles up the hill. Thanks Jmariey for the parking tips.

As the sky started to get light Janice and I was amazed to see how close the anchovies were to the pier and serf line. There were about a half dozen or so harbor seals pressing them against the beach and working them.

We waited a little while to see if the others were going to show... Couldn't wait any longer so we launched and headed to Pleasure point. As we were getting to the spot I get a call
via vhf from Mike (solsrf1) and he said he was on his way out.

I baited my rods with whole squid and dropped one down to the bottom and the other rod I flyline for a chance of white seabass. The ocean was calm and the water temp was at 61degrees. A minute or two later my rod, set up for white seabass, doubles over! First hit of the day I get excited with white seabass visions and grab the rod as 12lbs maxima line is peeling out of the new abu Garcia 6501c3 I picked up from Mel Cotton's the night before. It was a few minutes before I could get any line back in and started to see color. I grab the net and got the fish in. It was whoping 3lbs Mackerel. By this time Mike was in the area and he drops down a sabiki rig and hooks into three mackerel and tangled up his rig. Mackerel wide open!

Janice, and I were not to far from one another as Mike doe’s a drop and catch maneuver on us! He arrives late and catches the fish we were all after. “BIG HALIBUT” He lands the 20lb beast. Congratulation Mike you are the but king from Monterey to Santa Cruz!

Janice and I contuned to catch are fun and plentiful mackerels. I did get a good take down on the halibut rig and as I was reeling up... a seal intercepted and I was in for what seem to me a  hundred yard slay ride. Mike was paddling hard to keep up with me because we where not sure what i had on. It was a great day on the water with good people!  Got back just on time before the white caps started showing . Bait ball was still hanging by the pier. Pictures will be posted by Janice.

Thanks again guys and gal for hooking up.

Cool  Alex. Hope you caught enough mackerel for bait and to eat of course.
Too bad you can't make it to the Hollow tommorow.

Alien, glad you had fun, I know you can eat squid and mackerel so I'm sure you ate well! even when it is 10 foot nw windswell and 20 knots fromt the nnw out on the coast you can fish capitola. it's like a bass pond, but with more critters,  :smt002. some of my favorites are the girls in bikinis on paddleboards,  :smt007.

I like the sound of a 20lb halibut! 3 rods, one halibut, that is not too bad a score.

Today couldn't have been more perfect! Thanks, Alex!

The weather was phenomenal, the mackerel provided an entertaining catch from the fight to the little "please, not me!" squeek they make, the company was lots of fun, and I landed in the (minimal) surf without eating sand. Can't ask for more, other than maybe Mike's halibut hitting my hook instead! :smt005 Congrats, Mike--watching a catch like that firsthand is SO exciting!

I've said it before: I'm hooked!

Mike has the hali mojo it seems.

Janice, Ill have to pay attention in the future and listen for the mack squeek!

And of course alien has to catch something weird.

Another day in paradise...
pound for pound, mackerel have got to be one of the hardest fighting fish.  I may have to take the kids out with the ultra lights and small kastmasters to the capitola wharf.

hey alex, don't feel bad bout no butt love

least you scored stringer full of mackies

they're so rich n tasty, so much so, people think they're yucky

but grilled or pan fried with lemon makes them yummy

and i know you like them stuffed with goodies

which i gotta to try duping

so hope for a chance to get down there while they're still rolling

maybe for a butt while definitely also macking  :smt003

We went out yesterday and it was a very calm day. Did the drop, launch and park thing with no problems. We got a few small rock fish, makeral and one king fish. On the way in I drifted a dead squid and hand some real good hits. No takers though. FUn day and it was fun to see Theresa on fish. :smt002
