Forgive a newbie question. I understand salmon must be 20 inches to keep in seawater. I assume the same is true for fresh water? I can't find a distinction in the California sport fishing regulations. Thanks.

I was thinkin’ there is no size limit from the carquinez bridge and upstream...take limited to two and barbed all day...Correct me if I’m wrong anyone...tackle shops upstream know as well...keeping a salmon under 20 inches is a questionable personal decision even if it’s legal, they look dang small unless you’re looking to get the skunk off..: :smt006

I watched a salmon documentary a while back.  It was on Amazon Prime (still might be).  The footage was from BC.  In it, they describe the young males that come up river to spawn with the much older mature salmon.  These young, quick opportunistic males dart in and out of the gravel beds the spawners are making for an opportunistic threesome.  A little squirt and jet if you will.  I say we get em out of the gene pool, lol.

My brevity is only about my ability to respond right now - not bagging on you for joking about jacks.   :smt001

Isn’t it the end of life for all the salmon that swim upstream? I assume that’s why size doesn’t matter. They’re not going to live to get any bigger.

The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope.  ~John Buchan

It never occurred to me that they're going to die anyway, so size at this stage wouldn't matter. Thanks for the insight.
