Has anyone tried using squid for sturgeon? It seems to be the choice bait for the Columbia or Pacific NW areas. Am curious how effective it is, especially if it's cured with some sort of attractant.....Although I'm guessing you would have a problem with leopards and bat rays?

I have never heard of anyone using squid but I have heard of people using american shad chuck and having success. Also have heard of guys doing good using curred roe from the american shad.  I do know that the guides on the Colombia use chunks of shad for those 9+ footers. I havent tried it myself yet. Maybe I'll package up some this spring and give it a try.... Shad makes great crab bait!

Did some Sturgeon fishing a couple weeks ago, aboard a PB. The owner, who fishes the Bay regularly, said, he has caught Sturgeon on Squid. We were using Ghost Shrimp and Herring. No Sturgeon, but plenty of big Leopard Sharks that day on both the Shrimp and Herring.

you end up getting lots of junk fish on squid-- sharks, bat rays and such...unless the water is running super fresh which flushes the junk out

Thanks for the advice guys! I tried ghost and squid out of Alviso......nada. I would have appreciated a bat ray or a shark....it's been so long since I had a tug.  :smt009
