I went to secret reef xj-19 solo with my rolleez... those things are amazing...  :smt007

did not see a single other human-powered water person which was kind of cool,  :smt004.

sometimes I'm just not down with the lemming feeling.

made like I was abking out there: solo hunter after the lingasaurus and humondo reds in the unpopulated hinterlands...

thick fogbank offshore, but sunny where I was fishing. I was the only truck parked. nobody on the beach or in the water... trundle down the beach and launch behind the reef..

I dropped down for my first 23" red or 42" ling and...

then reality hit: 6 gophys (a trophy gopher  :smt005), 7 blues/blacks, a pretty red greenling and an underling. all on a white bucktail fly and a very worn 3.5oz megabait with a single gamakatsu 510 assist hook on the tail.

at least it was a hot bite,  :smt001.

I got those fish in just 2 hours before 9, then the wind hit, so I bailed. first time I have had a sonar unit on that reef and the fish were biting at the same time. looked pretty crowded down there.

underling followed a blue up, then hit the free megabait while I watched. only an underling would pass up the blue on the fly to hit the megabait...

I think if I had fished for a legal ling with a big swimbait or live blue, good chance of finding one, but I really wanted quantity, haven't had that kind of crazy shake-em-off-your-hook fishing yet this year.

no pics. why? cause the spot was secret and the fish I caught were many, but small. also, no camera,  :smt044

Hey John - I have read so many reports of yours. This report seems a little different and a bit fishy. Did you make it up?  :smt002 As others wanted, pictures please.  :smt006

Eric, that part about the big ling and big red is a joke, but hopefully that is clear from context?

the rest is all true. just filletted 4 'gophys' and 6 blues,  :smt009. I think it was 15 fish landed in about
90 minutes of fishing which was a lot of fun and restored my belief in the hot bite!

my wife took the camera on her trip to Norway, so I don't have photos,
but I probably wouldn't bother with photos of those little guys anyway.

when the swell is 2 feet there's a lot of launch spots available! basically any beach,  :smt001. some guys
in a powerboat waved to me, but I didn't see any kayakers or surfers on the beach or in the water.

Danglin, I know better than to contend with your fearsome combo of experience, skill and luck!  :smt004.

Now, Eric knows what this Eric wants!   :smt002  I think your headline actually implied you were going to present a photo-essay...

Sounds fun, John, but don't use my name if you're gonna keep secrets.   :smt009   :smt044  Now get back out there and get us some pristine pics of a lifeway we can admire and aspire to.  And throw down a word like bucolic or transcend if you want the glory, pal.

(that hali carcass goes 40" - would someone get there ass up here and show me how to catch those things?   :smt004)

Sometimes a story is worth more than a thousand pictures...or is it the other way around?...either way, J hooked up and made a report that made me picture him having a great time by himself.    no buddy system needed!
