I'm wondering if the new Outback design launched in 2019 handles significantly better in the surf than the older hull design. I'm trying to decide between buying an older model or splurging for a newer one and i don't have a good idea about this area.
Thanks
John

I was under the impression that the new one tend to scoop water up in the bow.. interested in hearing the responses to this.

I have only heard a couple people's opinion on them, I would like to see what others think as well.

the thing that I would love from the 2019 is the rudder control on the right side!!

I own a 2018 camo outback and have zero complaints?! I do need better trolling rod holders, so there’s a complaint that I’m addressing in the next month or so  :smt005

I’ll admit I like to stop by CCK from time to time and liked the xtra accessories that come with the 2019 outback. However, I did notice that the deck was rather flat and it also seemed like waves would “lap over” that much easier.  Talked with my CCK hookup and she gave the thumbs down on the 2019.  Not that it’s not a decent kayak... don’t get me wrong... its just “flatter” and you will probably take on water that much more.  My 2 cents.

I have a 2019 outback. Before that I had a 2015 revo 13. Also in the household was a 2016 outback. It’s been replaced with 2020 outback. So I have some experience with the old and new styles. If you can get one I would suggest the new style over the old style 100%

As for the surf launching and landings the new style handles launching very well. The landings are a little trickier since the rudder stays under the kayak and can get pushed by current so it’s a little trickier to keep straight.

I rented the '19 Outback from CCK a few weeks back.  The nose and flat deck definitely takes in more water and is a wetter ride than my '14 outback.  The water drains quickly with the design and scupper holes.  But if I got a '19, then I'd definitely consider upgrading from my wetsuit to a drysuit.

Thanks for the valuable information. I hadn't thought about the ruder on return. I was mostly thinking that the bow would be better at going through the waves. It would be good if there was a way to lock the rudder in position.

Thanks for the offer to try your 2018 out. I have a 2016 so I am familiar with how that hull design handles. Its interesting that a few people prefer the older design. What didn't you like about the 2019?

My wife is a lefty so maybe I can use the right side steering to convince her that it's worth it but a newer version.  :smt002

honestly, it would come in handy in so many different occasions.  So awkward to reach the right arm over or under the leg to bump the streering while trolling a jighead
