It looks like I may get a chance to install a fish finder on my yak this weekend, so I'm trying to work out my parts list so that I only have to go out to the various stores once. I've read the new school power supply article, and also the posts about mounting your transducer. From those I've made the following list, did I miss anything?

Fish Finder w/transducer (looks like it will be the Eagle FishEasy 245 DS)
Goop
Foam/Pool noodle for transducer mount
Pelican box for batteries (I know, expensive, but I have a spare that isn't doing anything)
10 battery holder
Waterproof trailer light plug
Foam padding for inside the Pelican box
Dielectric grease
Zip ties (for the extra wire between the transducer and fish finder)
Heat shrink (for wire connections)
Screws/washers/nuts for mounting the FF

Anything else? Part of my reasoning for this list would be for other noobs like me to have a checklist to work from.

I still haven't decided what method to use to secure my battery box... I'm leaning toward a hanging method, but who knows

How are you planning on cutting the hole in the deck for the FF wires to meet the head? I ended up buying a one of those drill bits that cuts nice neat holes. Once you do that you probably might want a wirenut or go Mendo style and put a wine cork in it like mine.

Extra pimp points if you use some split flex tubing http://www.amazon.com/ADANAC-GROUP-KITBAG034-BLK-SPLIT-TUBING/dp/B000MVD1SU/ref=sr_1_3/102-9848175-2668954?ie=UTF8&s=office-products&qid=1189179450&sr=8-3
for the wires to run thru in the hull.

Good catch, that's something I hadn't thought about. Since I'm not too familiar with what the end of those wires looks like, I may have to get the FF in my hands before I know how I'm going to do that. I'd like to maintain a "clean" look on the exterior of the yak, so my initial though is some sort of waterproof wirenut, or perhaps I can modify one of those rubber composite wine corks?    :chug

Silicone for sealing the holes you will drill for the fish finder mount.

And a tip: a sharp filet knife works pretty well for cutting the pool noodle.

I will try to get a pic this evening of the bit I have, works well with the wier nut or cork method.

Hey Fishin-Jay,

Did you get this installed? I'm curious as to how well this fishfinder is working for you. I'm considering buying the same unit.

Thanks,

I've got it installed and it seems to be working out great so far. The only gripe I would have about it is that I am having a little trouble adjusting the sensitivity. When I leave it on auto, it tends to pick up any little bubble in the water. I noticed at Lake Mendocino this weekend that when I would paddle near an area where there were bubbles escaping from mud on the bottom that my whole screen would end up filled with black dots from the bubbles. The auto sensitivity never compensated for this and so I had to manually change the settings in these areas. When I fish anywhere else, the unit is great!

That's exactly the kind of feedback I was looking for. I don't think the unit being too sensitive is gonna stop me from getting it. I can always adjust as needed. Glad you like it.

Thanks!!!
