Hey guys, my wife is going down to fish Morro Bay in December from a cattle boat.  What's a good, level wind reel?  I hear they fish deep, just inside of 300ft.  None of my bigger gear is level wind.

Also, should I be looking for high, low gears, or 2-speed maybe?  It's been a while since I fished deep on a charter and trying to keep it comfortable for her.

I'll pair it with my Trevala Heavy rod.

I am pretty sure you can only fish rockfish in water less than 180ft, but that's still plenty deep enough to want a fast reel. I really like my 2-speed avet, but its a bit pricy. Large baitcasters are also popular for rock fishing, something like a Shimano tranx or Daiwa lexa.

I like the Diawa Lexa 400 and American Legacy Fishing has them on sale for $175. They’ll hold over 300 yards of 50# braid and are a pretty sturdy reel.

Just an opinion, not a sales pitch...

Usually out of the running for Husband of the Year by January 4th of each year...

Central Management Area is 50 fathoms (300ft).  I like my Avet 2-speed too, but I dont think she'd dig having to thumb the braid.

Trans is interesting. I'll look at it.  Thx

Thanks, it sounds like a pretty good deal, but I'm staying away from Lexas.  My Lexa300 has been a pain in my ass.  The drag isnt very smooth and every season the spool release button jams (I'm rough on equipment  :smt003).

Okuma Komodo ss. Synchronized level wind so it tracks on both retrieve and cast or drag being pulled out. Clicker. Great drag. Lots of info and reviews out there about them. I have both the 300 and 400 sizes and both will put the whoopin on fish.

those are the exact ones I have - both of mine are lefties.  Feel free to borrow them Mark.  Best to teach Quan how to fish lefty anyways.  Its so much better.   :)

+1 on the Komodo SS, they're smooth. I have lefties as well and I'm right handed. Mark, you can borrow mine, too.

Thanks, Ben and John. I'll take one of you up on the offer.  Looks like a nice reel... I might just pick one up (righty) anyway.  Maybe send her off with both so she wont have any excuses for not bringing home big verms and lings.  :smt003
