Hello! I'm new to kayak fishing and live in Fort Bragg. I'm trying to meet a few local folks that fish the area that might be willing to let me come along on a trip or two. I've fished at Caspar once already but that's pretty much it. So far I've only hooked a handful of rockfish but am interested in learning how to target more fish. Thanks!

Welcome aboard! Caspar is always a place I have wanted to launch from. It looks like it can get hairy with the surf launch there. I'm sure Russian Gulch is a much easier place to launch and land.

Welcome. I am a huge fan of Russian Gulch and Albion. Would love to go out with you before the season ends. No yo holds some of the easiest crab fishing too so there’s always something to catch in Mendocino. Hit me up anytime.

I'm going out with a friend at Van Damme tomorrow, probably early afternoon. Lots of yakkers go there so you can often find someone to tag along with. VD is a nice easy launch, head straight for the bell and then go either north or south.

Caspar has a surprisingly lively shore break and if you are inexperienced it will dump you (or at least it did me!). But when it's good, it's a great place to go out and the fishing is very good. Just be careful coming back onto the beach.

Russian Gulch on the other hand is as placid as a pond, with a shallow shoal to make it even easier. Short paddle out to the fishing grounds too. Sometimes the fishing is tough, there are lots of fish but they can be finicky.
