My family is fairly new to kayak fishing and have only gone to Lake Berryessa and Yorty Creek.  We are interested in trying Barge Canal but wanted to make sure it is doable for an 8 year old.  She has a Revo 11 and can usually keep up, but we were wondering if shipping boats go to barge canal.  We don't have a lot of experience dealing with boat wakes, except for a few stray bowriders at Berryessa, since we usually stay in 5 mph zones.  Also, is the current strong there?  Thanks in advance!

Go for it! No current. Next to no boat traffic. Ships happen every once in a while but slow .moving. Great place to go play! Look for the tutorial on the search box. Learn all about it from a port master. Also you tube moo moo outdoors. He posted
D vid of his trip out there last week....
my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

Big ships throw a big wave.It is a concern if you are lower in the deep water channel. Where you will be,they will be going slow.
We have the government, that our forefathers warned us about.

They go slow in the turning basin near the docks. If you stay up near the launch they can't come up that far. There are occasional power boats and racing sculls practice there. There isn't current but there is a tide which acts like a mild current. Click on the link at the bottom of my post and it will take you to a great tutorial for fishing there.

The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope.  ~John Buchan

One thing I learned being on the Stockton Deep Water Channel was that big ships can reverse the local current as they approach, and magnify it after they pass - they displace so much that they act as a dam, then the water equalizes after they pass - and how much depends on the direction and speed of the normal current. The effect can extend some distance up side channels.  Not much of a problem, but it might surprise you.  Of course your going to stay well away from the ships.
