Looking to go on a 3 day trip on san diego and i’m wondering what rods and reels to purchase before i go. Any suggestions? I just picked up a saltiga 35 2 speed and already have a tranx 400, what else would i need to buy rod and reel wise?

I suggest 30 lb and 40 lb test setups, as well as a 50 or 60 lb rig if you will do dropper loop fishing during the day or evening.

A quality combo that can handle 20lb, 30lb, 40lb, and 60lb.
Longer on the lighter rods for casting baits, shorter on the heavier for jigging and trolling.
Each should carry at least 300yds of line.
The four combos should handle anything up to 5 days.
Also, I like to carry a heavy 8ft rod that can cast 40lb for surfice iron and poppers.
Good luck

I have read here and on Coastside that you can rent rods and reels on most of the boats, and from the local shops. Might save you a ton of money.

Yes, you can also rent combos on most of the boats.
But be sure you see what they are renting you first. I know on the Intrepid and the Independence they rent Avet Reels and Seeker Rods, but on some of the lesser boats I saw them renting large Penn Senators for rockfish. Also, the landings rent some quality gear.

As an aside, if you want to fly down, Southwest will let you bring a 3" PVC tube up to 94" for free.  That tube will hold 4 rods very snugly.  7' is the practical limit.  A 7.5' rod doesn't have enough padding at the top and bottom.

The SWA gate agents generally don't know the fishing baggage regs, but they're nice and will take a couple of minutes to look them up.

If I catch anything big, it gets shipped back via the fish processor.  Otherwise, I have a Kawartha, insulated dry bag that can carry 30# of meat. That's a fun bag at the security station.

Anyway, I bring a Komodo 463 on a Tsunami Trophy for 25-40#, Newell 322 (30#) for casting irons (got an 8' 2pc rod), Makaira 8 on an Ahi Assassin for 40-50# bait and flat falls (this combo has landed up to 100# tuna), and a Mak 15T on a Seeker Hercules for my 60# flat fall rig.

What else do you have in your quiver?
I was surprised to find out some of my gear for local species (MBAY) worked rather well down there on school sized tuna and yellowtail

last time i went on a 3-day, I remember using my 30lb and 40lb rods quite a bit.  I had a 50lb rig and don't think i touched it.  I also did have a 20lb rig which I used some.  I took 5 rods (20lb, two 30lbs, 40lb, 50lb) and borrowed the trolling rod from the boat.

With your Saltiga 35...load it with 40 or 50lb braid and just take some 20, 30, and 40lb mono/fluoro and run a short top shot on the lb test needed.

My advice, if its your first trip, don't buy everything!   :smt044

If you have setups that can cover 30 & 40#, I think you should be fine.

I don't know about renting, seems like you could buy a couple setups with the cost of renting.  I remember a few people asked last year and a seeker/talica combo was like $150/day.  3 days, thats $450, just to rent.
If you ain't first, you're last.
