That is cool. I just assumed without looking it up at all that a sabiki rod is any rod that you would use for just your sabiki. I will probably have to either buy one or make one cuz it is a constant battle to untangle the things even if you don’t get hooked.

Here you go DIY sabiki rod could possible double as a flag post or light post too.

Someone commented about skipping the hose clamps and putting a cheap reel seat on it instead.
Good post, love the light flag addition, I’m on it...will post results... :smt006

I love sabiki, but I hate sabiki, so I make my own sabiki with size 4 hooks, 3 hooks instead of damn-too-many.  Ballon strings for the teaser, salmon scent for the bait.   All my kayak rods have pool noodle attached, so the hooks all go into the pool noodle instead of flailing around.

and I thought getting one of the hooks caught on my shoe for a few days was annoying!  dang.

and Victor, that is an elegant solution and another reason to use pool noodles.

After reading your post, I placed an order for "EAT MY TACKLE Sabiki Bait Fishing Rods 7 Foot, 2 Pack", for my wife and me, for $100 directly from eatmytackle.com.  Thought $50 per rod was a reasonable price.  I want to use them to catch lobster baits while hoop netting.

Well, that was pretty easy. I had all the parts kicking around in the shed so it was just a matter of drilling, flaring, sanding, and putting the reel on. Haven't used it on the water yet but it works really smoothly in practice. Took maybe half an hour, so if you're interested, it seems well worth the minimal time/money investment. I like the idea of 6 tiny hooks no longer swinging freely behind me when the rod isnt being used. Only issue that I see is that it's very tip heavy which makes it a little awkward so I might throw a some weight in the butt to balance it out.

Okay- I have a question...  Can't we not legally use more than 3 hooks per line in California?  I have been cutting my sabiki rigs doen to 3 hooks all this time, but now am wondering if im missing something...

There is no limit to the number of rods and hooks you can use in the ocean unless you are targeting salmon rockfish lingcod cabezon greenling sturgeon or pachali.

If you are still n SF bay then you are correct.

I read, on this site, a post from a someone who said they always hang a jig under their sabiki rig and have caught halibut that way.  I did that up in Humboldt trying for bait over a relatively sandy bottom and caught my first halibut from a yak!  I always cut the rig down to three hooks anyway because they are so hard to manage. Is that possible from a sabiki rod?

Also, on my last trip to Tomales (skunked!) a guy had just come out of the water with me on an Outback.  He had a beautiful halibut and about a 35” White Sea bass - both on live bait he jigged up with a sabiki rig.  He told me he removes the barbs from the sabiki rig because removing anchovies from the barbed hook tears them up too much.  I’m going to try that as well.

I certainly would consider pinching the barbs because of the tear up the chovy head factor...did you look at that sea bass and say “oh, I see you picked up a little sea bass, cough cough....” :smt002 :smt005 :smt006

You can use a swim bait as the weight with the sabiki rod however, the rods are very rigid so you will need your drag set light. You also want a weight that fits snug to the tip of the rod. If the weight is loose at all it makes a horrible racket banging against the rod.
