Thanks that’s interesting

I knew from experience (some nasty ones) that long period swell moves faster but it’s interesting there’s a formula that works Wonder how and where that originated and if it’s based in physics or just a rule of thumb

Maybe too much science

Basic thing anybody should know is long period swell will kick your ass in the right circumstances

My original glass yak has 8 or 9 patched holes and a missing hatch from a day I got caught in 10’ long period swell a mile or two south of pigeon pt

Was a very painful lesson

Thank you for the insight, hopefully I'll learn from your lesson.

Ouch!

Here’s the source. It’s a long read but I learned a bunch from it.

Wow, that's a great writeup. I just learned a whole lot about waves and swells. Now I'm going to search for the equation for depth as a function of period.

As to the OP, in my very limited experience, I get in most trouble by waiting too long to exit the kayak. It took a couple of yard sales for me to learn to get out before the yak hits the sand... Now I try to time it so I get out in water around knee-deep.

I bail in 3 ft of water and let the boat go in first solo, unless it’s super calm then I’ll ride it in to the sand. I also found out that in the native propels I can peddle in backwards and power forward over swells, then continue peddling backwards, keeps the swells from sneaking up on me.
