Going to mammoth lakes area (convict lake / crowley / june lake) in late sept. and wondering if anyone has advice in regards to successful trout rigs / lures/ trolling, hot spots, or any other recommendations. I l've looked around on this forum for past posts & can't seem to find any. I've never been to mammoth area and from all of my research, it looks to be pretty dang scenic! It only took a few pics to convince my wife to get her fishing license & come too...and leaving the kids at home with their grandparents!... WHOOP! WHOOP!

You are in for a treat! That area is absolutely gorgeous. Its been a while since I have been up there so I don't have any specific spots. The lakes with easy access can be quite crowded. Lower June lake was a lot of fun to fish. Just slow troll a black, brown or gold wolly bugger behind an bubble and you will catch plenty of fish. I caught tons of planted rainbows along with wild browns and brooks mixed in. Tons of people too. You can hike to a number of small lakes and wade fish if you want to get away from the crowds. Most of the lakes in the area are connected by tiny streams. These little streams are generally packed with brook trout that are really tasty!

Beautiful area with lots to explore. I was at Rock Creek lake (at 9,300 feet elevation and past Tom's Place) over the 4th and trolled up several trout on a dodger (4 inch) with a Gulp worm. Tried lots of other combos (krocodiles, grubs/flasher, and flatfish) with no luck. With the dodger/worm the fish never seem to take the bait on the first nibble. When I see movement on the rod tip, I stick the paddle in the water to slow down and wait a second for the strike. When (if) the rod bends, I dig in with a few power strokes to set the hook.

There is nice hiking along Rock Creek as well and plenty of stream fishing opportunities for brook trout.

Good luck out there.

Take a hike to Parker or Walker lakes and bring worms!  Awesome hikes and less impacted than the off the road lakes.
