I've been seeing so many American shad coming through in the Yuba River every year since I've been working there; however, I always miss my opportunity to catch them...
I heard they've been down in Marysville for a couple of weeks, so I finally got my heavy butt up to go find them.
I called my friend Greg.  He told me that he & his friends caught 200 of them around Shanghai bend on the Feather two weeks ago, and that they should be coming up to Yuba by now.  I told Greg to come meet me after work and we gonna look for them.  As the sun was going up, it was getting pretty hot!!!  The river was very low & we could see through the water to the bottom.  We saw lots of pikeminnow & trout even some salmon too, but we couldn't find shad there...  So we met up with his buddy Jimmy, went to pick up Greg's boat, and went back to the spot where they fished before.
When we got there many people were fishing for striper but not shad fishermen...  We fished for awhile & Jimmy pick up one shad but no other hits.  Greg noticed that the river was much higher than few weeks ago.  I guess Oroville released a lot of water in this past few weeks.  We decided to go up on the riffle to look for shad but water was pretty milky & high, so we couldn't find them anywhere...  We thought they left already (I missed them again!?)...
We tried fishing for small mouth a little bit, but no hits on them either...
When we were about to leave the river, I asked Greg for one last shad run at the same spot as before.  After a few casts, Jimmy got one & I finally got one myself!!!  They fought pretty well as I heard!  We kept casting and Jimmy kept getting one after another.  I got another one too, but I lost it.  Greg also started picking them up too; but I kept getting snagged in same place that they were fishing...  Bites come & go, but Jimmy probably picked up over 10 of them & Greg as well.  I just kept losing jigs...  We could have fished longer but we were  getting hungry, so we called it a day & went to get some pizza (greasy food is always good after a long day of fishing).
I think that's it for this year's shad fishing & I'm very happy that I finally caught a shad, but I wish I could caught more.  Maybe next year.

By the way, I saw this guy waking down the midtown of Marysville with his dog.  He had a stringer full of catfish!?!? :smt003
