I'm Charles, go by "Charlie Tuna", and hail from the Monterey area, specifically PG. I've kayaked for years, but am new to fishing. So that's what I need to learn about (what rod and reel to purchase, how to mate things together, etc.). There's so much to learn.

Hi Charlie,

Welcome,

In your case I would highly recommend that you go out with a guide. They will provide everything you need, and give you expert advise on what gear to buy based on your budget. As an added bonus you will know if this is really something you want to do before you start spending money. There are good guides up and down the coast.

Welcome, CT. Lot of great kayak fishing in your area...
Are you pondering what I’m pondering?

This is the place for answers.  As far as gear it all depends on what you like I use 8-9 foot steal head rods with 30 lb braid and 30 lb mono leader   lots of people like 6-7 Foot rods.  I prefer light rods for the action.  I fish for lings, rock fish, stripers, salmon with the same rig.  Pm me for more specific rod reel combos I use.  Welcome to the addiction!

Buy the $20-$30 Shakespeare combo trout rod, swap out the 8lb mono for 30 lb braid and fish away.....if it gets beat to shit or you loose it buy another.... there just like me CHEAP!
