You were right to be wary of a mountain lion. A friend of mine was hiking at Wilder Ranch around 15 years ago. A deer came flying around the corner of one of the ranch houses. A few seconds later, a mountain lion ripped around the same corner. You don't want to get in the way of one of those 200 pound kitty cats.

Used to ride my mountain bike there - seen MANY bob cats. Always wondered if there were any bigger predators in that area.

That whole area above UCSC has mountain lions. They like open grassy areas with adjoining tree cover. There are a lot of wild pigs up there around Wilder, as well as deer, so plenty for them to eat.

Around the same time, a jogger and his dog were followed by a lion across the road from Gray Whale, which connects to Wilder. The wildlife people figured it was a young lion that was interested in the dog.

Cool story and pics, RockHopper.  Last Friday when Brian and I trudged to Fish Bay during the big minus tide I saw deer tracks along the edge of the sand and tidepools.  Then I told Brian, "there's the deer that's been making those tracks" and it was out in the tidepools, so I think Paul's right - abdiving deer!   :smt003
