My family and I are staying at a friends Catalina Condo at Hamilton Cove from 4/22-26. I plan to spearfish a couple of the days and can rent a kayak/little boat. I can't find any spear fishing charters located on the island unless I'm just missing them. I've dove channel islands before but never Catalina. Any thoughts on spots/charters?

Looking for some intel on where I should dive (10-70 fow). I've got little guns, big guns, float lines, reels etc... anything I need for any fish out there.

Thank you in advance for the help!

There's definitely a fish under THIS rock....

The few times I've dove Cat have been on friends' boats so I can't help you with kayak or boat rentals.  I don't know of a guide service on the island.

You could be going when the WSB are running.  Maybe YT too.  The waters have changed so much in the last 5 years that you could be surprised with what you could run into down south.

I would recommend you bring a long gun.  Given the water clarity, size of target species and more wary reef/kelp fish, you would limit yourself with a short (Norcal) gun.  110cm in the kelp and longer for BW hunting.

If you're only hunting in the thickest kelp bed or shallow reef, then take reel guns.  If you plan to do any open water or further out from a kelp bed then I'd take a highly visible float with float line.  I would consider taking a float that you can mount a dive flag on  It'll be a pain to dive with especially if you're diving through kelp, but Catalina gets alot of boat traffic.  A warm weekend and it can be really crowded with many boats cutting through a kelp bed and a bright float will help them see you better.  From a hunting perspective I like the reel when I'm hunting but I prefer to fight a fish witha floatline after I've shot a fish.

Good luck,
Nate
