We finally pulled the trigger on a new baby mobile (2017 Honda CR-V EX-L - only had 3,500 miles on it :smt007 - wife's preferred car) and can finally mount racks! No more ghetto yak on top of sedan system!

I found a few old threads with links to products but the links are dead. After looking at a few $100+ yakima straps, I was curious if you guys have other solutions for keeping your yak protected on the racks. I also have a python cable lock that I currently use at home but I imagine it banging around on the yak or roof if I'm on the highway with it on. The thought of taking on and off between driving and parking isn't a big deal, but was curious if there is something else out there I'm not seeing.

congrats on the new car!

I had a locking strap I bought at home depot to lock my surfboard on my vw when I drove to school after surfing.  No one ever stole it, but it would have been easy to cut through the strap and steal the board.  It did have some medal inside the strap to supposedly make it more difficult to cut through.

When I left my kayak on the car I would run a bike cable through a scupper hole and around the rack and locked with a padlock.  No one ever stole it.

I use the Kanulock straps to secure my kayak. They are easy to use, but they would be pretty easy to cut through. I also have a 20' coated cable that I can run through the carry handles but it is more of a pain to use and needs to be removed when driving.

I bought some cable locks from from Home Depot, link below. The end is small enough to fit through my scupper hole. It's also handy that the 3 cables use the same key. The coils have good memory so they don't bang around when I'm driving. They aren't super heavy duty so they wont stop a determined thief, but they are good enough for my neighborhood.

+1.

I have a very similar setup for mine. My yak is locked to my roof rack pretty much all the time and have never had any banging issues from the cable locks...

I didn't even think of these type of cable locks. That should be prime. It seams like most of the "locking strap" options would be super easy to cut even with wire. Maybe I'll just use my pthyon cable while I'm not driving and see how annoying it is to take on and off. I doubt it's too much of a hindrance.
