I smoked them.  If I were out on the trail all day I think I'd appreciate the sustenance...  You could probably light a piece on fire because it's so oily.

Very cool story - thanks for sharing. I remember seeing shoals of lamprey in the Napa River above Yountville as a kid. Fish surveys still find good numbers of them here but I haven't seen one in years.
