went out today on my first outing with my big game, went out of MBK.   a few blacks and bluues, a red one i don't know which one.  All small under 15" so I let them go.  You guys should have a forum for beginner follies-i got to the shore rigged up and went to connect the battery to fishfinder and---forgot the battery :smt010 :smt013, went out anyway and just played with different depths. using cutup squid.  I think i am hooked eerrr the fish too!!!!!.  Can't wait to go out again and maybe I'll fish with one of you yak fans.

thanks for the report! the first thing you'll want to do is get familiar with the fish you had. the blacks and blues could have been keepers. as far as the red , was it a rockfish? that could have been one as well.

where all did you fish? down cannery row and out to the bouy?

I fished by the first bouy-red colored-and yes the red one was a rockfish, it think it was a kelp rockfish.  They were keepers i believe but just wanted to have fun-it's a flyfishing tradition I have.  My first outing anywhere and i catch and release-in this way i won"t upset the fish Gods and i will always have fish in the future, plus if they are small i will let go just my way to help conserve the species for all. Can't wait to get out again with battery this time!!!! :smt002

sounds like a good time and that area has always been fun. thats also a good place for sand dabs as well.

on the way to the red bouy did you see the trash can shaper bouy with a flag on it? closest to the MBK launch area?

that bouy is anchored at the north end of a nice reef that runs south. i did some scuba diving in that area and it was pretty fishy too.

the fish finder is great, i use it more as a bottom sounder more than anything. my ff is not that great for locating fish so i mainly use it to tell me how deep and if there is any structure.

The faster you develop a mental checklist (or physical checklist) the more proficient you'll become, faster.  Also, for me, prepping the night before is critical b/c I'm a total space cadet from 0330 to 0600.
