Sorry about this, but I just bought a bunch Megabait 3.5 & 4.5 oz jigs at FW 20% off.

So how do I fish these?  Snap it up and let it flutter down, finesse jig, drop down and reel up?

Any help would be appreciated as my initial attempt didn't pan out too much.

Thanks!

I like to take the chrome baits depending on the drift and bounce them off the bottom as I am moving with the drift. I also put a dab of squid on the treble to help entice the fish to bite. The smaller mega bates are also great to throw into boils of bait fish so many of us have two or maybe three rods ready for different situations.

when i took the guys out on friday, they fished like crazy and only lost one lure. the trick was a small bronze mustad treble hook. the 1/0 size is perfect. it bends very easily when the point is caught on a rock, but will hold just fine when the point is buried into a fish. the number 1 treble hook will break on a rock, not bend. the 2/0 wire size is too heavy, and won't bend out at all and you will start losing jigs.

you just fished them at the wrong spot. fish deeper water with those guys, or areas with more hungry fish.

use plastics or bait in capitola.

Get rid of the treble altogether, and put on a 5/0 VMC siwash.  I rarely use a jig and rarely miss a bite.

I use Braid Line 30 to 50 or even 65 lbs. With Braid you are in more contact with the lure. I let it hit bottom and wind up a few feet.  I tip it with squid and use long strokes.  Trying to keep in contact with the bottom.  Also, keep an eye on your fish finder and stay out of the kelp.  Blues and Blacks are sometimes swimming by just below the surface.

If you do snag.  You can free spool or loosen your drag and try to run uphill too pull it out.  Also, like a tight drag at first for Mr. Ling.  Get him off the bottom and then you can loosen it up a bit.

I took Alan's advise during the HMB Derby and managed to save my one and only megabait from getting snagged (several times). THanks Alan!!!
