Does anyone have instruction for making a DIY crab float like what is shown in the photo.  Thanks!

I think the picture does a very good job of showing you exactly how it is constructed. The black donut on the bottom is obviously some sort of weight to make the the float stay upright. You'll have to experiment with the right around of weight. You don't like the traditional rope through the float setup? It's a lot simpler to carry and deploy. When I'm on the water, I find that simpler is always better. Remember, you're already carrying a whole bunch of gear per trap. Do you have room to carry a few of those stickup floats?

Lucky, I went crabbing for the first time today and thought the flags were certainly more visible.  But you're right I was already over challenged with the two folding crab traps and the associated gear - like waaaay over challenged. And I mark the location of the drops on my FF.  Thanks for talking me out of a decision to complicate my life further.   :smt004

Plus the easier they are to see the more likely they are to be poached. I have seen floats painted black. Presumably, stealth crab pots  :smt002

When the area is too crowded I use a piece of driftwood and weights on the line to mark my traps. Helps to minimize theft.

While it makes if easier to see the buoy from a distance; the buoy should actually be able to dive under the surface during moderate swell. This will keep the crab pot from "walking"; especially since we crab kayak do not use that much weight in our pots.

In addition, there is a higher possibility that a rouge bull kelp will get easier snagged on that style float and drag our pot....

the float should be just buoyant enough to keep the weighted line visible enough to find when in the close proximity of the pot; even if slightly below the surface on a swell....

A good GPS mark at 'full' zoom on the map will help you find the pot.
