Hello all,

I'm rigging up a new hobie outback, and I bought an Echo chirp fish finder. I'm wondering what my best mounting options are. I have ordered the through the hull foam mount but I am wondering if there might be a better option. Has anyone modified the Lorance pre-mounted plate on the hull? Seems that might be an option rather then going through the hull.

Any help would be appreciated,

Thanks,

Elkaholic.

New outback as in 2018 model? Or new to you as in pre 2016?

If it’s a new model it comes lowrance ready as long as the transducer you plan to use isn’t oversized for the cavity. Instal is pretty simple and easy enough to figure out. If your outback is pre 2016, then it does not have the lowrance ready system. You have a few options here, but through hull is my preference. Just get a big tube of lexall, lay down a nice pad of silicone where you want the transducer, place in the center so that there is at least 1/8th of an inch of silicon between transducer bottom and hull, then cover/surround with as much of the remaining silicon as you want. Lexall is just a brand, any clear silicone will work. I have just used lexall a few times and like the results and durability.

I have the 2018 model so the plate is already installed. Ill have to see if it fits in the existing plate. unfortunately I've been working non-stop since I bought it. Id like to have access to the water temp on my screen so hopefully it fits.

If I Have to go through the hull ill take your advice.

Thanks for the help.

You can get water temperatures thru-hull.  According to my handy-dandy pocket fishing thermometer, my transducers (one is a Lowrance and the other is a Humminbird) are off by 6 degrees and 5 degrees (high), respectively, after about 20 minutes needed to normalize.  They are consistently off by that amount - and I can do subtractions (but please don't ask me to do any math with fractions).   :smt003
