I am about to pull the trigger on a wet suit combo that is 7mm farmer John and a 7mm jacket.  That makes 14mm over the torso!  A buddy of mine says that's what's needed for our 50 degree water.  The reviews say it's a good temp but can be very bouyant.  Any opinions for NorCal diving wetsuit thickness?

Thanks for helping a noob!

Effffff that. I tried it once that way and overheated so I cut the bottoms at the belly button. Plenty warm enough with an open cell suit.

What type of suit is it open or closed cell?

That's typical for a closed cell scuba suit.

Open cell what cam said.

I have a 7mm with a farmer john, and would not recommend anything thinner for NorCal. I went from 22 lbs to 17 lbs. Still thinking about cutting off the farmer johns to make breathing less constrictive. I've only been cold a few times.

This looks like a closed cell.

Open cell typically has the hood attached to the top.

Yeah you may want to do some research on open cell and make a decision from there.

I wear an Xcel closed-cell 5mm 2 piece w/ farmer john, so 10mm over the torso.  It's ok, but a few years old now and getting colder.  My next suit will be a 7mm open cell with a high-waist instead of the farmer john (for bathroom breaks).

I only freedive.

If the reviewer didn't have a weight belt, I'm not surprised they were bobbing around like a buoy in a full 7mm.  :smt003

What kind of diving are you gonna do, the suit you're looking at would work for freediving but is designed for SCUBA.  If you're gonna freedive, a freedive suit is just a hugely better choice.

If you're doing SCUBA in Norcal I'd recommend the 7 + 7 you're looking at.

I tend to get cold easy so my freedive suit is listed as 7+7 but the FJ changes to about 3mm from the waist up. Perfect for me. The attached hood is the bomb, as far as warmth goes.

Since you live close, I'd run down the the Freedive Shop in Sac, get a good rep and talk it out, listen to what they say, then go home, then go back and talk some more, then buy.

It's taken me years to learn that procedure, usually saves me money and gets me pretty close to exactly what I REALLY need.

I've never actually been to that particular shop but have heard it recommended over and over,

And there lies the hesitation, I am trying to buy a good scuba and freediving suit. I have the open water scuba class next month, and would also like to try my hand at freediving. I currently own the same suit only in 3 m m top and bottom. I suppose I could mix it in with a 7 mm and find the right combination for each discipline. Thank you for the opinions and suggestions everybody, I sure appreciate it!

If you are getting certified get a scuba suit and use it for both.

If you decide you really enjoy free diving then buy an open cell later.

I free dove with a scuba suit for years before converting.

Open cells are much more fragile than scuba suits.

Stick with your original choice.  :smt001
