fished the kelp bed off Cannery Row today with a few newbies....45-60 FOW working the outside edge with swimbaits, or whole squids.

it was a bit cold with a SE wind that later switched to E and blew up to 15-20 by 10:45am.  Water temp 55.

We got a slow but steady pick of blues, gophers, grass rockfish.  One 15" blue, big boy.

I had one hit that I thought was another ling (we caught and released 3 underlings today).  Free spool with the clicker, really made the reel sing!

When I got it up was I surprised to see a 16" Calico!  pretty fish and great fight.  Pretty much as far North as I've ever seen one, for sure the furthest north i've ever caught one.

We finished the day with an average of half-limits, dinner for all.

Great day on the water, and I'kll never forget that Monterey Calico.

Aaron caught one there also last weeek I think.

Now that I've met the calico in its home waters I can appreciate that it would have given you a run.....feisty beasties.
Saltwater is the cure for everything that ails us,

Glad to hear you scored some fish with the newbs. There are some nice fat blues in that spot and a few hard fighting calicos.Sounds like the wind made it a bit tough, but at least you were pretty sheltered and could tie off to kelp if you needed to.

Congrats on the ling at HMB. :smt006

As one of the new guys mentioned above, I have to say that I had a great time. If anyone is out there wondering how to get started, Allen's rockfishing clinics are a good deal. Being out on the ocean in a kayak for the first time was great, and Allen showed us some simple and effective tactics for going after rockfish. I caught 4 blues and one of the lings. Allen also demonstrated the technique for filleting the fish. All in all a very complete introduction.

Thanks again Allen, and the fillets we cooked later that afternoon (using your recipe) were delicious.

Thanks Mike!  It was a pleasure fishing with you, let's get out there again soon!

I had the same recipe last night, after the HMB derby.  Delish!
