Rig that Malibu and fish it till you're crazy with success, find spots, land some fish, share the journey and pics....that Malibu has a middle seat for solo does it not.  I dare you to land a late Hali in that thing and cheer in victory.  While you're searching, start drilling holes in that malibu.  I understand if this is not the path you choose, I wish I never got rid of my Malibu so I could fish with my son.  Commercial guy told me, despite all the details, if you don't have bait in the water, you aren't going to catch any fish... :smt006

Haha thanks Eddie.  It does have a middle seat for solo use, it's just on the slower side and gets taken in the wind and current - but on the plus side, it's a good workout I guess.

I've already put an anchor trolley line on the side (yakattack I think?), mainly for Giants games in the cove. I do have accessories to rig it for fishing, after using it I just felt like it wasn't going to be my personal fishing yak but more of a cruiser for friends to use (as I speed by them effortlessly in a pedal) and to take with the fiancé (when I could really use a workout).  Plus I'd rather them get drenched in that thing than me, bit of a wet ride lol.

I haven't really fished in it yet so I haven't seen the pros and cons in relation to that.  Maybe I need to get out there with some people who have pedal kayaks and see how they fair.  I'd love to land a halibut right now, just need to find exact coordinates to do it at - I don't have a fish finder!

Don't make me start preachin'now.  :smt005 Truth be told, I have a good kayak and I'm still finding more stuff for it.  Keep it simple, yet I've joined the addicted masses.  Get on a fish without breaking the bank.  So the Malibu is a little bulky, says the guy who sleeks along in a 15 footer.  Great training to learn how to use that Malibu like a boss, then that new platform will be like heaven(hardly), but two different worlds for sure, when you pull the trigger.  I'm negotiating for a sail for my kraken as we speak and she is kindly reminding me, then what?  I said not a motor, that would be crazy. :smt006

Biggest misconception when I started kayak fishing.  Fish finders do not guarantee results.  Sometimes, they can be more frustration than going without one.  They have definitely helped me when targeting species such as rockfish and lingcod, that primarily like structure.  But sometimes, I could mark schools of fish and not get a single nibble after tossing everything at them.

But inside the Bay, I've caught striped bass and halibut is all manner of depths and environments.  Rocky, sandy, slopes, flats, clear water, murky water, deeper water (30'+) and even less than 5' of water.

I started with a tandem Pelican 120t.  Went crabbing with my wife a lot, and fishing solo off it for awhile.  No fish finder, no rod holders, no pedals.  I researched spots from online forums and remember spots that I caught fish from shore.  I was still able to catch fish with a non-angling kayak.  I eventually moved onto an Ocean Kayak Trident 13.  Loved the kayak.  Great all-around kayak, and friend on the wallet.  I caught a lot of fish/crabs with this rig.  My only downfall was watching my friends in Hobie go further, faster, and longer (Eddie is an beast of a paddler.  He can go for hours longer in his Eddyline than me in my Hobie.  BEAST MODE!!!) than I could.  Not to say they caught more fish, but the pedal drive kayaks do raise your chances to find fish (not necessarily catch them).

What's most important is getting out there and wetting a line.  Whether you catch anything or not, you tried, gained some experience with your kayak, along with learning the conditions of the water and lastly, enjoyed your time on the water.

Hell yea, there's a ton to learn out there so I analyze and analyze lol.  Sometimes a good trait, sometimes a flaw.  Everyday is an opportunity to learn

What Hobie do you have?

I've got an Adventure (older version of the Revo 16) and an AI. The AI is the swiss army knife of kayak fishing as you can set it up so many different ways. You might look at a used Hobie Revo or Outback. If you can live without the lawn chair seat (pre-2015), you can save a bundle.
Are you pondering what I’m pondering?
