6/3 Fort Ross

Had about 6-7 hours that i could fish (including drive, etc), so made a last minute decision to go up to Fort Ross. Got there about 8, launched by 8:30 or so, off the water by 11:15- and home in time to not loss all WAF.
Saw "the brians", polepole out there, plus a couple of unnamed yakers.  I managed two legal lings, a shorty, a nice vermillion, and a bunch of rockfish.
All released!

Not on fire by any means, but a steady pick of fish for me.  Nothing noteworthy.  I was fishing large hex bars all day in search of lingzilla.  I did keep 1 medium red for dinner, but everything else went back, including a couple probably legal lings.  Lot's of small blues cruising the surface.  No large boils like Nao saw on Friday, but some puddlers here and there.  Also marked a lot of fish suspended at ~20' and would pick them up slow trolling a kastmaster when moving.

SteveS, I didn't even know that was you (not that I've ever met you).  I gotta get better about stopping and chatting with people.

I'll be headed up that way more often i think- its only about 1:20 from my house, almost same difference as bean hollow

It was good to finally be back on the ocean again.  I didn't bring my camera out, but I ended up catching and keeping 3 vermilions, a china and a small ling (26").   I would have been easy to limit on more pelagic rockfish like blues, blacks, and olives, but I didn't need that many fish and was hoping for some AOTY points so I stuck to big lures in deep water.

DFG was out in full force on Sunday. They had a road block on HWY 1 just north of Jenner with at least a dozen wardens and pulled over anyone with abalone or fish for further questioning.  Every officer I talked to seemed pretty pleasant, they looked at my fish and my license and I was on my way.  There were a few abalone divers getting worked over pretty good, I'm guessing they didn't follow the rules to the letter.  I wonder what they do with the confiscated abalone.

The guy's been a fixture for nearly 15 years- my only goal on that trip was to get a pic and meet him- i did both. Kinda like landing a YT and a WSB on your first trip to La Jolla

Admirable, guys.   

And don't get me wrong, people, I kill plenty of fish in the course of the year.  I just feel the need to celebrate hanging with a community that doesn't have the limit mentality all the time.

sorry for the late post on the pictures steve. first time out of fort ross and the company and experience were top notch, looking forward to fishing it again real soon . hope to see all of you at the hmb derby.
