Hey you'll  :smt006 ,
I'd like to make some homemade rod holders out of pvc pipe, and was wondering if anyone knew where I could find some kind of rubber or soft plastic piece to go around the top (it's kind of rough from cutting it). Also I think it would make it look much better, no so homemade.  Any other tips on rod holders would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, BigfishBabb

I know what you're talking about.  I've been looking for the same thing.  That simple rubber ring is good for reducing noise and helps the your rods from accidentally slipping out.  I just don't know where to find it.

1/4 " plastic tubing (available at most hardware stores in the rope section), slit dow the middle of the tube and glued over the edge of the pvc should give a nice finished look.  West Marine has pvc holders that are flared on the end and have a slot for the reel.  Not sure on pricing but if you're going for the un-home made look that would be the ticket.

OK.  Now where do you get really sturdy crates to mount these in?  I just noticed I'm starting to crack my crate at the rod holder attach point.  I guess I didn't do the studiest attachment either as I just used hose clamps.  These worked well on my vertical holders, but the ones I put on a diagonal are the ones ripping loose.

I just drill  holes on the pvc pipe (top side, middle and the bottom) and run heavy duty plastic tie downs (they don't rust - compared to hose clamps) and secure it to the inside of the milk crate.

what about tool dip - the liquid plastic stuff to coat the grips of tools?

I use medium strength zip ties to hold my rod holders on.  They'll hold up to keeping the rod upright, but the zip tie will come undone before the rod breaks if I take a tumble in the surf.
