Hey guys, I have a general question. When going to the Tahoe area lakes, do you always have to get your kayak inspected prior to launching? What happens if you want to go out before the inspection stations are open? I’ve tried to research but I haven’t found a definite answer. Thanks!

Nothing in those links (including a VERY LENGTHY FAQ) about kayak inspections...I went up a couple of weeks ago and stopped in the check point in Meyers.  They checked it out and asked a couple of questions, but didn't give me a "receipt" or anything.  I think they do something to boat trailers though so inspectors at launch ramps will know it's been checked.  I think its the honor system with kayaks, SUP's, etc.  After going through the check point in Meyers the ranger at DL Bliss kiosk asked where the boat was last in the water, then we said we just went through the inspection, and she said "oh ok."  All they are really worried about is if your kayak is dry, no water in it that can support life.  If it's dry, you can launch with a clean conscience.

https://tahoeboatinspections.com/tahoe-keepers/    Last time I went you could self inspect if you took the quiz.

Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

A Steelhead always knows where he is going, but a Man seldom does.

If you are kayaking on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe you Must have an AIS (Aquatic Invasive Species) Sticker for that calendar year placed on the Port /Stern area of your yak.  $6.00.  No inspection required . If Parks or NV Water LEO see no sticker expect a citation. This started in 2013 but usually just an educational warning.  As of Last year no more warnings.  California side has mixed/confusing inspection info for yaks.  if you launch at Donner, Boca, Stampede, Prosser self inspection with forms available around the lakes.

The Important thing to protect our lakes is self responsibility. Thank You.

Desertdiver, thanks for the info. I actually sent for my AIS tag last week, even though my kayak won’t be here until next week. You’re correct, the info for California is s little confusing. I did find those forms online today also and printed some out. I think I’ll be all set. I see you’re from Reno also. I’ll be testing out the kayak at Frenchmans once it comes in and I get my Garmin fish finder installed on it.
