Fly Fishing line control Hobie Outback

Hey,

Friends have actually been out fishing me with paddle boards and fly casting equipment the last few times I went striper fishing around the Marin Islands.  That doesn't mean I had bad days.  I wanted to ask about Line Control inside the boat and how people typically manage it.  Casting Basket?   or something mounted right in front of the seat and behind the pedal drive?  Also is it realatively easy to cast when sitting down?  I have plenty of experience and am sure that I have done it on the river when I was being sneaky, but wonder.  Shooting head vrs. sinking line?  Basically looking for any advice from  people that know.

Ha ha! Yes, I came here thinking this was about rudder lines...

First, get rid of the Hobie.  Hobies and fly fishing don't fit together at all.   

Second, a towel in your lap to catch the slack line will work fine and be less of a PITA than a stripping basket.  The basket will work, but because you have to move your knees when pedaling, it's going to create other problems.

Third, I can't help you on the type of line unless I know how deep do you need to go to reach the stripers?  Your friends - the ones out-fishing you - should have the best advice.  Sink-tips on a level running line work best in most situations, but they require and altogether different casting motion.

Fourth, go out and sit in the yard and practice casting, then you'll know how difficult it will be for you to cast from a sitting position.  It's even better to gauge it when sitting in the yard, in your Hobie.  For me, it was easy.  YMMV.

I stay seated and use a stripping basket attached to the side of my seat (Jackson Cuda).

Works great, although I do find it slightly limits the length of line I can strip in. But far preferable than dealing with running line catching on the many kayak bit's and pieces that come with fishing out of a kayak.
