Interesting! But why revert back to the old regs? They haven't even raised the size limit. The situation hasn't gotten any better up there. But hey, I"ll go searching for some abs if I can.

I wouldn't count on it -- from Norcalunderwaterhunters posted 8/30/18:

From Josh Russo update on the new Abalone FMP and potential re-opening ???????

"The department is moving for a two year extension of the closure.  If things turn around and are on the upswing and the next management plan has an option for a diminimus fishery we might have a season in 2021.  A diminimus fishery by definition is a fishery that allows for an inconsequential number of animals to be taken.  I'd ask for 15,000 tags to be sold with a daily and annual limit of 3 allowing for a maximum of 45,000 abalone to be taken.  We would also probably have to have some control regs to keep people from pulling all 45,000 from one spot.  So many can be taken from sonoma and so many from Mendocino for example"

I just got this information in an email from the Fish and Game Commission today.

It looks like they want to extend the no take of Red Abalone for an additional two years until 2021.

Damn, you got my hopes up for nothing.

That text in the regs is just a placeholder, it has been discussed in more detail on NCUH.  The closure is 100% going to continue indefinitely :smt010...I'd change the thread title.

Yeah, while they're currently talking about 2 more years, I think "indefinitely" is the key word. What's happening with the urchins is shifting the whole ecosystem with no end in sight, and even if they all disappeared tomorrow, the recovery would be years in the making.

Seriously go do a dive, check it out.   :smt010
